Drumming

From North America to Siberia, Australia to Africa, China to Britain – wherever you travel on this majestic globe, the drum is or has been used in sacred ceremony. The beat of the drum has been used in greeting the dawn, welcoming the birth of a child, praying for rain, celebrating at a marriage ceremony, drumming to the setting sun or bidding farewell to a passing friend.

The drum has measured the passage of time, holding us firmly into the now, reminding us of our heat and connection through rhythm and bet to something that we must stay connected to. Before modern music, people would draw together around the fire and would use the drum for dance, song and story telling.  The drum was used to help unite the people and drumming is like a heart pulse, the sound and vibration drawing us close.

With drumming there is no continuous melody, it is the breaking up of silent space with sound at regular intervals.  The first sound that you heard was your mother’s heartbeat as you floated in the amniotic sack, before your birth.

For most of us, this must have been the ultimate comfort zone and we want, deep down, to retain that level of stability.

When we drum together, in a sacred circle where everyone is equal a strange uniting friendship between the drummers takes place. When we use the drum for sacred ceremony it brings a different dimension, the more you drum, the more you will realise that the drum evolves into an extension of your self, your inner self.

As you work with drumming you send solid beats and vibrations through your energy pathways.  As you beat away on your drum you let your body relax and become part of the movement, the energy pathways carry messages up and down, inside of the body to the external environment and they connect you to the rhythm of the earth.  This is what you want when you drum, to get connected to the earth, fire, air, water and spirit.

As you lose inhibition and loosen your mind and physical frame, your spirit relaxes and becomes open.  The drum becomes part of your journey, helping you to shift though your physical, emotional and spiritual limitations using sound, vibration and movement.

Reiki

Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei which means Universal Life Energy and Ki, which means a key or an opening. Reiki can then be interpreted as a key to universal energy. It is the channelling of natural life energy though a human being to another living being or object.

Prana or Ki is the Life Energy that keeps the body alive and healthy. When Pranic Healing is applied to the affected part of the body the rate of recovery or healing process increases tremendously.

Shamanic Healing is a powerful method for the recovery of wholeness. Despite trauma and despair, many people have been able to face and transcend their pain. With renewed wholeness comes empowerment, joy, insight and the ability to truly show up for our lives.

I also organise a monthly Drum Circle on the last Monday of every month.
